Google Sheets

I really enjoyed learning about Google Sheets, I think this will be a useful tool for me to use.  I had a basic understanding of excel so it was good to see what Sheets could do.

Google Forms

We had a short amount of time to make a Google Form, this is a basic one I made.  Feel free to complete the form :)

Google Maps

One of the sessions today was to experiment with Maps and embed it onto our Blog. I had a go exploring the local area.

DFI Day Four #4

Today we were having a play looking at Blog data and making a bar graph using Google Sheets.  Here is my bar graph.

Digital Pepeha using Google Slides

Today I learned how to use Google Slides to present my Pepeha. It was good to familiarise myself with some of the word art tools and layering using Control, Shift, Arrow Up or Down to bring objects forward and backwards. I also learned some tricks about looping the presentation by clicking on the start and restart options before publishing. Big thanks to Makaore for his support with my Pepeha.

Day Three #3

Today we looked at setting up a playlist on You Tube and how to embed it on our Blog.  Here are a couple of short videos on Leadership by some very influential leaders.  There are 3 in total.

DFI Day Two #2

Today's session was focused upon Workflow which included lots of tips and tricks for organising your gmail, calendar, tabs and note keeping.  I definitely needed more than the 10 minutes to tidy up my workflow.  At least now I have the tools to tidy things up, I just need the time to get it all into order.
One of my favourite things about the day was learning about Google Keep, I think once I get faster in using this it is going to be a life saver.
One of my least favourite parts of the day was recording ourselves doing an activity so we can learn how to embed it on our Blog.  Seeing and hearing myself on the video was not very flattering! Thanks Richard for being my Buddy in this activity, perhaps we should have done separate recordings so that I'm not on your Blog.
A big thank you to Dave Winter and the people in my Bubble for supporting me today.  I thought I knew how to do the present screen during the Meet but when it came down to actually doing it I needed a helping hand.  Thanks for your patience as I navigate this new learning.  During this session I learned that the chrome tab enables music to be shared with people during a Meet and this blocks out the surrounding tabs on your screen which is helpful. Our group had some pretty great music tastes and it was lovely to see all the beautiful beaches around New Zealand.

Things I Learned Today - Agenda

Google Keep

  • When you install it on your phone it links to your computer automatically
  • Fantastic for lists, notes, reminders etc
  • Organisational functions such as colour, pinning, archive, dictating notes, reminders (when you add a place the phone will vibrate as you pass that particular place as a reminder)
  • You can take a photo of text and it will strip it so it can be used as as document.  This can be dragged into a doc on your computer
  • You can add your digital signature so that this can be used when needed
  • Handy for everyday passwords but certainly not your bank account!

Gmail

  • On the settings you can display the density - default works fine
  • Change your theme under settings so you can easily identify different accounts (remember to save the changes at the bottom of the page)
  • Insert a different signature once you have set them up
  • Snooze mail until you are ready to read it later
  • Use the labels and filters to sort mail - settings - filters - create filter
  • You can apply filters to emails that are linked
  • Access calendar from gmail when making appointments
  • To search use is:unread or From:name or Has:attachment - this will help in refining searches
  • unroll.me - will help you to stop subscriptions easily

Calendar

  • Settings to decide on density and colour
  • You can display week, day or month and only show certain calendars
  • Go to general settings to set up time zone
  • Whilst in calendars there are shortcuts such as week (W), Day (D), Year (Y) and to skip forward a week (J) and backwards a week is (K).
  • When setting up a meeting, add conference

Taming Tabs - I decided to display this in a table

Taming Tabs to Help Workflow
One Tab
Install as part of chrome extension.
Great for managing tabs.
The Great Suspender
This will put the tabs to sleep until you need them.  You can book a time for them to ‘wake up’.
Tab Snooze
Same as above. This will put the tabs to sleep until you need them.  You can book a time for them to ‘wake up’.
Toby Mini
Helps to organise your tabs into collections.
Workona
This can do all of the above.  Recommended by Dorothy.
Bookmarks
You can add folders in your Bookmarks bar and organise your commonly used tabs.  You can remove the words so that only the icon is showing, this will reduce space on your bar.
Helpful Tip: Pinning Tabs is a great way of keeping key tabs so that they stay where you want them.  To pin a tab, right click and Pin.

DFI Day One #1

Thank you

Firstly a big thank you to Dorothy Burt, Nicola Minehan (Bubble Facilitator) and the team for an excellent start to the Digital Fluency Intensive session today.  My head is buzzing with all the things I have learned.  You certainly get an understanding of what it must be like for students in a classroom as you try to comprehend all the information and then try to apply it, then share it.  Today I am living the full Learn, Create, Share experience.
It was lovely to meet the other 'students' in my group as we grappled with the technology and tried to apply our learning in a set time frame.  I am looking forward to getting to know them all more over the next few weeks.
My hat goes off to Nicola who was extremely patient with us all and calmly talked us through the steps and repeating them when we stumbled.

Key Learning Points from Today - Day 1 Agenda

Getting organised for a fluent work flow

  • Personalising settings - adding a photo to Google profile and choosing a theme for GMail
  • Tidying Drive Folders - Putting an asterix * puts the folder to the top, this can be used for a temporary folder that you need to use all the time such as the DFI Sandpit folder.  Numbering and colouring them is a great way of easily accessing key folders.
  • Use the advanced search when looking for docs in your drive using the drop down arrow on the search area.
  • Using Shift Z means you can add a doc to a folder rather than moving it which would interfere with others who have access to the same doc.  You can still make changes to the doc as you normally would.
  • Opening a doc while you are in a folder means it automatically saves in that folder and saves you filing it later.  If you have given people permission to the folder then they have access to the doc too and don't have to ask.

Something to remember for Week 9 :)

  • Setting up Google Groups is a useful tool for communicating with big groups, everyone is included and nobody misses out on important information
  • groups.google.com allows for collaboration with groups and these can be shared as opposed to your contacts group which can not be shared.
  • Remember not to invite members, use the Direct Add instead
  • Use the Create button to create then name the group and add members
  • Information on how to do this is on the last page of the link in the agenda

Using Google Docs 101

  • When you cut and paste from a doc on the web use 'shift, control V' as this takes out the underlying code and keeps it clean text
  • Use the style heading for titles and sub headings as it keeps the text uniform
  • Use the Insert Table of Contents by highlighting the heading and links will show at the top of the page which means people can go directly to the part they need rather than scroll through it all
  • Using Tools - Voice Typing to record what you say into text is a great tool
  • Using the Explore Tool to add images ensures they are legal images and already acknowledge the source
  • Using the Explore Tool to cite text click on the " marks and it will record as a footnote

Lastly, Tips and Tricks for Google Posters

  • We had to make a poster so I have put all the information I learned into a poster form and had the opportunity to create and share what I learned
